Updating To Dokan Plugin – Help Needed

Sk Hi there, I have some questions and concerns regarding upgrading/switching to the Dokan plugin. Currently, I'm still using just the theme, however, after updating woo commerce, the theme is no longer compatible with Dokan and I'm experiencing some major functionality issues. My worry is, my web developer has made a lot of custom changes to the theme, therefore, if I switch to using the Dokan plugin, I'm concerned I will loose all of those changes. Also, do I need to delete the current theme them install the plugin and add the new Dokan theme? My other concern is, if I do this, will I loose all of the work I have done so far? Will all my settings be re-set? Will I need to set up all my menus, pages, sliders etc again? Thanks very much, Paul

Yes you will lose all those changes and yes you need to delete Dokan Theme to make room for the Dokan Plugin

Your settings and other things are stored in the database

Hi Mike,

Wow, I will really loose all of the changes? That’s not good at all, surely Dokan realise that some people have paid a lot of money to make custom changes to make the theme suitable for their business. They cannot just comes along and move to a plugin, no longer update the theme and expect us to move over after having spent a lot of money configuring the site.

I’m stuck in a mess right now. The theme is not compatible with the newest version of wordpress and if I switch to the plugin, I loose all my changes. It’s a total nightmare. Dokan have not taken into consideration the people that have made changes to the theme. I was under the impression Dokan would be offering the OPTION of the plugin while still keeping the theme. Now they have thrown me under the bus and left me with a theme thats not compatible with woo commerce. Disaster.

@Paul i believe i used to feel the same way up until i figured out a new, kind of costly solution to this problem. Hello Paul,
We did not stop support for the Dokan theme. The only mistake you did is updating the WooCommerce plugin without having a look at the change log. WooCommerce was saying that the 2.2.2 or later version has major changes and you MUST have a backup of your database and other files.

And both the Dokan theme is compatible with WordPress 4.0 Can you please point me where did you get the info that it is not compatible?

The solution I can suggest you right now is
1. Restore a backup (if you have)
2. Upgrade to the plugin.

Hi Sekander,

I have not yet upgraded to the Dokan plugin so I’m not sure what you mean, I don’t think you have read my messages correctly. I’m still using the Dokan theme, not the plugin, the old theme that has everything built in. Nobody told me anything about a ”change log”, I didn’t even know is existed.

I’m talking about the Dokan theme, it is not compatible with the latest version of woo commerce. I’m not talking about the plugin or the new theme, the old Dokan theme that had everything built in. I have not yet switched to the plugin because again, if I do, I will loose all of the custom changes I have made.

I upgraded to the latest version of woo commerce and now the Dokan theme is not compatible and it’s functions are not working correctly. The site is very new so I do not have any back ups. If I switch to the plugin, I will loose the custom changes that have been made to the theme. I don’t know how much clearer I can make it. I’m stuck with a theme (the old one) that does not work with woo commerce.

Hello Paul,

First thing – you shouldn’t have never ever customise original theme. You should always use child-theme for customisation and modification.

Else, this kind of things comes up. If you modify original theme/plugin then with upgradation you are going to loose all modification. Woocommerce recently released their version 2.2 and from this version they changed a lot of things including their functions,hooks,filters etc.

So, old Dokan theme will not works with it. We already released new version of Dokan theme and plugin, both are compatible with latest Woocommerce.

now, it is better for you to ask your developer if he has a backup or log file what he changes and ask for his suggestions how can you proceed as that developer will be the best person who knows exactly what is going on with your website.

Hi Mahi,

Ok, thanks, I will talk to my developer, I’m not sure if he used a child theme or not. However, what I was trying to say is that even if he had used child theme, if I have to delete the old theme to install the new updated theme, wouldn’t I loose all of the changes anyway, even if using a child theme because the new one is completely different, not an updated theme?

Because in order to use the plugin, I would need to delete the current theme and instal the new version of the theme so wouldn’t I loose all the changes anyway? Furthermore, if I switch to the plugin, will all of my settings remain? Such as slider, menus pages etc. ?

if your developer used child-theme then lucky you :). I will recommend you to just update your Dokan theme then. Why do you want to switch to Dokan plugin? Dokan plugin for those who want to use different theme style.

However, here is the instruction how you can upgrade to plugin: http://docs.wedevs.com/upgrade-to-dokan-plugin/

but, you have to use different theme, not dokan theme. So, you have to do some adjustment in regards – sliders,menus etc. But, you will not lose any data.

Hi Mahi,

I’m still a bit confused. I do not need to use the Dokan plugin? How do I update the theme then? Currently, it is not working with the latest version of woo commerce. I was under the impression that we all had to switch to using the plugin because the theme is no longer compatible with woo commerce latest version. I’m currently getting errors when just using the old theme.

I updated woo commerce and was getting error messages because the Dokan theme was no longer compatible as woo commerce had been updated.

So is it accurate to say that you could either use the theme or the plugin and do not need to use both?

You should be able to upgrade your theme from your website Dashboard or, download it from your account then manually upload it to via FTP program in to your theme folder and overwrite with existing files.

But, please please make sure you have backup and your modifications been done via chil-theme, not main theme. Else you gona lose all the modifications.

Hi Mahi,

Ok, thanks very much, Just to confirm, I can install and use the new theme and not need the plugin? The theme still has all of the built in feature? I was under the impression that the new theme had to be used along with the plugin because it says in the post ”weDevs will no longer provide updates for its Dokan theme” and ”Users are required to upgrade to Dokan plugin”.

I guess what I’m trying to say is can I just use the theme without installing the plugin? Does the theme have all of the same features and if I download and install the new theme, it is compatible with woo commerce? I do not have to use both the theme and the plugin? The plugin is only for those that want to use another theme? Is that accurate to say?

This is hopeless. They should’ve never piggy backed off woocommerce. It’s just not worth it. Next time create a stand alone theme and wedevs would’ve been better off. Woocommerce was not made for what we’re trying to do and its only going to get worse.

I’ve spent countless hours and hundreds of dollars working on this and its just no way for it to work properly. I thought the stand alone plugin would be better but its not.
